Japan's great, the flight was great, Wal-Mart Sucks……




So while you all are sleeping, I’ve found some time to write a few words. Christe and I have made it safe and sound to Narita, Japan. The flight was a breeze! I mean it, the shortest 13-hour flight I’ve ever embarked on. I don’t think I brought up work in conversation one time.

Simple and to the point we watched some bad movies with Japanese sub-titles. We ate some really good food, which I’m sure will be one of the last chances to do so until we return in August. We even found a way to catch a few winks (about 2 hours each) on the way.

We did however have our first travel mishap! My wife the expert packer needed ONE MORE BAG for the trip. So a quick trip to the local Wal-Mart to get a bag that should get us to China and then the plan was to ditch it for a larger one we would by there.

Well, guess what? The shit broke the second time she lifted the handle up! And right before we’re to go through security in Japan. Now keep in mind she’s sending a rolly-on through the security with half of the handle shaft protruding out ready to impale some small Japanese security checkpoint worker. Now I’m carrying the damn thing. If you put wheels on something, IT SHOULD ROLL.

Having that said, we’ve gotten a beer and I’m sleepy as all get out. So it’s off to Beijing to try out my Mandarin. I’ll try to write more then. Hugs to all that need ‘em and sorry Steve but the battery hasn’t held up the way I’ve hoped.

Sorry about the battery, dude. They are pretty common, and you should be able to find an extra in China. The Canon model number is BP-511 or BP-511A. The "A" model has longer life and is available for $50 in the US. Third parties also make the battery. Camera stores should stock them, as well as places similar to Best Buy (it's also a camcorder battery).

Let me just start off by saying sorry for the delay in posting, yesterday was an all day affair and I mean all day. It was a non-stop non stop-ness. First thing after breakfast, we (and all the other 55 CHI families and any other US parents adopting) had to go and get London’s physical. This is required by the US government (I guess) to get her a visa to enter the US. Man what chaos. This place has 3 main stations and each kid has to go through each. At first they sat us all in this hallway with a big sign that says “please keep your babies quiet.” Yeah like that was going to happen! They hand us each a folder for our baby. With all her information and her two visa pictures. I forgot to mention that yesterday we took London to get a visa photo. It was a mess because the “professional” photographer wouldn’t actually take the shot. Man was he annoying! London is in China! - I have to post pictures slowly!

I finally found some soy sauce! No, I mean it! I have yet to see soy sauce on a table or in a store since I’ve been here. I finally went to the hotel ‘western style restaurant’ called “Coffee Garden” and that had sushi on the buffet. There it was SOY SAUCE. How on earth in the whole of this country does every single Chinese person know, “When you see Cash coming, hide the soy!” All right, I know you all want to know about the baby. The baby, the baby, the baby, well I guess no more attention for me; it’s all about the baby! Much attention has been made in the adoption community about the ‘grieving’ that the child will inevitably do. Some start it on gotcha day and it takes days or weeks. Some wait for months and then just start crying and don’t stop for days. I however have started my grieving today and I don’t know when I will quit. Baby, baby, baby, baby when will it stop? Cash’s stinky little error and more china travel tips …..

In the adoption community, the families who have been here have made it clear that you should not over pack for China. “Anything you want can be found and it’s cheap!” is the general quote. I followed this rule. I have small carry-on for my entire 2-3 weeks here. I did however forget one little item, ………………………….. my deodorant. No big deal, right? Nothing a quick trip to the local Carrefour (Super-Wal-mart like store) won’t fix. Well, I should have taken my camera. The experience was unreal. People were everywhere. Octupus and Squid on ice to 7-up, to barbeque grills and ipods are readily available. We even found a replacement suitcase for less than $10 US. The only problem was it had a combination lock and the combination was not included, so no opening it. We made our way to the first floor where the more grocery store like items were to be found. I can say life for the Chinese (at least at this store) is not very different from ours. I however had a very hard time finding deodorant.
